Hello families,

We had a wonderful start to Grade 1/2! Students were kind, respectful, and transitioned beautifully into the classroom space. Our returning students also did an excellent job stepping into leadership roles and helping their classmates feel welcome.

Here is a look at what we got up to this week:

We spent time reviewing classroom and school expectations, problem-solving strategies, and the Zones of Regulation. We also explored how we can practice grace and courtesy and care for self, others, and our environment—key values within the Montessori philosophy.

S.T.E.M. Challenges -Through these challenges, students work as teams to develop cooperation, communication, perseverance, problem-solving,  creative and critical thinking, and the ability to share ideas and listen to others.



 

In mathematics, we played Roll and Record, where students rolled dice and recorded their results while practicing either subitizing skills or single digit addition, depending on their individual learning level. In our split grade 1/2 class, learning is differentiated not only by grade level, but also by each student’s skills, needs, and readiness. This allows students to work on appropriate skills while still learning and participating together as a class.

We also worked on "before and after" numbers. Students were offered a "mild, medium, or spicy" level to choose how many digit numbers they wanted to use. This work will continue into next week.

Introduction to the Montessori Work Period

During our Montessori Work Period, students build independence and responsibility while completing their curricular work. The teacher often introduces several tasks on the board, giving students choice in the order they complete them and providing a good chunk of uninterrupted work time. Students receive support from the teacher and peers as needed and move on to the next task when they are ready. Once all required work is complete, students may choose a responsible work choice that interests them.


Montessori Material Exploration

Students were introduced to some of the Montessori materials on the shelves. Lessons on the materials are given throughout the year as we progress through the curriculum and are always options for responsible work choice. Responsible work choices are activities students can choose throughout the day once they have finished their required work. Choices include working with materials from the shelves, using their doodle books, or reading quietly. These activities encourage students to make positive choices with their time while continuing to learn, explore, and work independently.

Reads of the Week







Hand Soap Donations
We are always looking for pump bottles of soap for our classroom. While the wall-dispenser soap in the school works just as well, I’ve noticed that pump bottles  right beside the sink are easier for small hands to use and seem to encourage more frequent, thorough handwashing. They also help us keep track of our hygiene routines as a class, since we can see the bottle getting low. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping our class stay healthy!


Paper Packages Sent Home
On Friday a LBS Calendar for you to keep as well as  a green demographic form and yellow admirable use policy form were sent home with you child. Please take some time to fill out and return at your earliest convenience.


Eating Time

Thank you to those who are packing a placemat with their child’s snack and lunch, following the Montessori approach. I am so impressed with how well the students are caring for themselves by cleaning up after eating and  opening their lunch kits and containers independently. These daily opportunities for independence are an important part of setting children up for success in our program as they help foster confidence, responsibility, and practical life skills.

Allergies & Food

Please let me know if your child has any allergies, especially dietary ones. This information will help us determine whether our classroom needs to be a nut-free zone (or avoid any other specific foods) for snacks and lunches. *Allergies also need to be registered with the office.*
