Hello families,

Here is what we got up to this week:

The zoo field trip was a blast! We learned so much about butterflies during our program and even got to see some hatching out of their chrysalises. Thank you to those who volunteered, we could not go on these trips without you.

The day after our field trip students were surprised to see an enclosure set up in our classroom. After discovering they are caterpillars, we dove into some scientific observation.

We continued our plant inquiry and learned about natural resources, with a focus on agriculture and gardening. Thank you to everyone who sent in root vegetables—students had a wonderful time touching, smelling, and exploring the different types!

Inspired by the book Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt , we started a multimedia art project. This piece combines scientific sketching, texture rubbings, watercolour pencil crayon, and watercolour paints to help students represent what root vegetables look like both above and below the soil.

In mathematics we learned about adding and subtracting on a number line. Grade 2 students decomposed numbers into place value to jump the tens and ones on their lines.  Many students would benefit from extra practice when adding and subtracting 10 from two-digit numbers. Practicing math facts at home can be simple and fun. You can use cards, dice, or even practice verbally while driving in the car.

Our Ozobot Tour maps are coming along.

In literacy students completed their character designs, writing sentences to describe their character using their planner. We then moved onto creating settings. These also turned out great!

In word work we looked at vowel teams with i and e.

Drop Everything and Read - to our plants and outside in the sunshine!

Please see below for an upcoming guest speaker in May. Green permission forms were sent home on Friday.

Parents Day
Our team will be celebrating “Parent’s Day” on June 1st  to recognize all the diverse families in our school. This means we will not be completing separate activities for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and one for Parents Day. Students will still have an opportunity to create Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards as a Responsible Work Choices if they choose. We are looking forward to celebrating all of the wonderful parents and guardians on June 1st! ðŸ˜Š

 Scholastic Book Orders

Scholastic book order flyers were sent home  Friday. If you are interested in ordering you can use our class code which helps us earn money towards new classroom books and materials! Your order will be shipped to the school and I will send them home with your child when they arrive. Orders for this flyer are due May 31st.
Thank you for supporting our classroom library!
