Hello families,
This week, our seeds sprouted! Students were excited to begin recording their scientific observations and measuring their plants every day or two. We also explored the needs, anatomy, and life cycles of plants. Along the way, students were introduced to important scientific vocabulary such as photosynthesis, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and glucose, helping deepen their understanding of how plants grow and survive.
In math, students learned how to use the Montessori Stamp Game to support subtraction and practiced solving mixed addition and subtraction equations. They used stamp game paper to help introduce the stacking method, strengthening their understanding of place value. Toward the end of the week, the Grade 2 students explored expanded form and began using it to support their addition and subtraction strategies.
Math Groups
We completed the final section of our Medicine Wheel: Yellow – East – Sweetgrass – Spirit. As we approach the end of the school year, our focus will shift toward strengthening connections within our classroom community, deepening our relationship with the earth, and exploring our own personal identities.

In Social Studies we completed oil pastel Canada art to go on the front of our maps.
Students then began learning about coding as they prepare to guide Ozobots on a tour across Canada. They are exploring how to use simple codes to direct movement, building early computational thinking skills. Coding is now an important part of the new Alberta math curriculum, helping students develop problem-solving, logic, and sequencing skills.

In literacy, students began exploring fictional stories by reading and watching classic fairytales. Together, with partners, and independently, they have been identifying key elements of a story such as characters, setting, problem, and solution.

In word work, we learned about vowel teams with a and o. The rule we have been learning is : when two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking.
