Hello families,

Here is what we got up to this week:

We wrapped up our reflections from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary field trip by creating tea-stain sketches of local birds. Students did a wonderful job blending creativity with scientific observation in their art.

We prepared for our YellowSteps residency by practicing using digital cameras. Students learned how to focus the camera by staying still, using the flash, and zooming in and out. Here are some practice shots that students took inside our classroom.

During our first YellowSteps walking field trip we looked for signs of wildlife and how humans and animals coincide in an urban landscape. Here are some student shots from the walk that brought up important discussions.

In mathematics we continued representing addition and subtraction with pictures and moved into ten frames.

We also started a Book Fair Shopping Spree project which allowed students to demonstrate their computational and budgeting skills. This project further highlights some of the financial literacy outcomes found in the Alberta Education wellness curriculum.

Canadian currency was introduced by sorting and graphing a handful of coins, with some learners also calculating the total value.

Estimation! Turns out on the 100th day of school all the glasses contained 100 items!

In literacy, we completed a writing workshop inspired by the book Sometimes I Feel Like an Oak by Danielle Daniel. Students applied their learning from the Sacred Teachings to make both a personal and a scientific connection to one of the teachings. They practiced online researching to learn more about their chosen animal’s habitat, behaviours, and adaptations.

Writing Workshop process: 1. Plan

2. Share/ 3. Draft / 4.Revise

5. Final Copy

Some beautiful Sacred Teachings art was created to accompany student writing. Inspired by the work of Canadian Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau, our artist study explored his life, inspirations, and artistic style. Time was spent looking closely at his artwork and discussing the emotions it brings out, as well as our wonderings.

LBS received part two of our Art TREX travelling exhibit. This one is called Howling In the Grass and fits perfectly with our exploration of prairie animals in Alberta. We reflected as a class on the art and some themes included:

- grassy prairies
- organic
- rustic and lonely
- colourless and moody
- Indigenous

As part of the upcoming MAPPS fundraiser, each class from the three CBE Montessori schools in Calgary is creating a collaborative art piece to be auctioned off.

Our class is making a “Bow Wow Jar,” featuring small thumbprint dogs, guided by dogs currently in the care of local shelters. As we show care for others, including animals, this project connects our classroom learning to the wider community.
