February 5th, 2026

Hello families,

Here is what we got up to this week:

We completed our artwork for the Art Card Fundraiser. They turned out beautiful! This is a school-wide fundraiser, with each class creating their own unique artwork. Stay tuned for ordering instructions, which will be sent home when ordering opens in the spring. Families will have the opportunity to purchase cards, ornaments, and puzzles featuring their child’s artwork.

In social studies, we learned about the fifth Sacred Teaching, Wisdom, represented by the beaver. As a class we explored the art form of pointillism as well as Indigenous beadwork. Students created their own artwork using Q-tips to apply paint. We then created shape poems with the theme of wisdom.

We also explored Indigenous lunar calendars and how throughout history and across different cultures people observed the sky, land, and animals to determine the seasons and months. Many students were able to identify which moon their birthday falls under by considering what is happening on the land during that time.

In literacy we explored the 5 senses of snow using adjectives and synonyms.

Daily L.A. stations

Students wrapped up their learning about digraphs through UFLI lessons, Words Their Way sorts, and Montessori word work. On Thursday, they completed a digraph spelling quiz for me to see their understanding. This quiz was sent home with the weekly spelling check-in, along with additional practice sheets for students who would benefit from extra support at home.

*Please note that the digraph assessment focused on correct digraph sounds, not full word spelling.

February Calendar

Our first Tea Time in Room 8 was a success! In true Montessori fashion students practiced practical life skills and grace and courtesy by preparing to receive tea, sitting and socializing respectfully while drinking, and independently cleaning their mugs afterward. These experiences support independence, mindfulness, and community building. Our next tea time will be on Tuesday, March 3rd.

In hockey, students practiced teamwork by passing the puck and moving toward the net to score goals. They then put these skills into action by playing mini hockey games, focusing on collaboration, strategy, and sportsmanship. We will continue this into next week.

Outside learning!

On Friday, we attended an assembly celebrating the opening of the 2026 Winter Olympics. We were excited to welcome Olympic bobsled athlete Alysia Rissling, who spoke to students about growth mindset, perseverance, and following their dreams. We will continue to follow the Olympics and the amazing athletes throughout the duration of the games.
