Hello families,

Here is what we got up to this week:

We learned about the seventh and final Sacred Teaching, Truth, represented by the turtle. The turtle carries all the teachings on its shell, reminding us to be true to ourselves and try our best each day.

To deepen our understanding, we created clay turtles and designed their shells to represent all the animals, symbolizing how turtle holds all of them together.

Here are all the Sacred Teachings. Ask your child how they added each into their turtle.

Up, Down, All Around Scientific Observation

Pink Shirt Day - We watched a powerful video illustrating the importance of showing kindness to everyone. Students then made their own "cup of kindness".

We played a math game called snowball fight!

Number line practice continued as we began exploring skip counting and labeling empty number lines. We focused on choosing a friendly middle point, such as 50 or 500, to help us equally space numbers apart while counting. Students who were ready created their own number lines with a skip counting rule of their choice.

Our final medal count graph as the Olympics came to an end.

D.E.A.R. (Drop everything and read) Some recent favorites have been, Guinness Book of World Records, large nonfiction animal books, and graphic novels.

On Tuesday the whole school took part in a free write picture prompt.

In literacy we started learning about procedural writing, or more commonly called "how to" writing. We planned, shared and drafted our ideas of how to build a snowman. The focus of this writing workshop is to add specific details for clear instructions and review our writing for sight word spelling.

Here is a video we watched illustrating the importance of adding details. It is a good laugh!

Within word work we learned about the long/short vowels O and U. An oddball is a word that does not fit the spelling pattern or sound, which students are learning is quite common in the English language.
