January 23, 2026

Hello families,

This week we were busy completing the January government literacy and numeracy assessments with students. Here is what else we got up to:

We learned about the Sacred Teaching: Love represented by the eagle. Students created heart sketchbook pages and wrote about the people and things they love.

We also learned about the third Sacred Teaching: Courage, represented by the bear.

Winter Favorites

In Science we teamed up with Ms. Campbell's class to explore ways to care for the Earth.

In math we continued learning about place value and different fact-fluency strategies. So far, students have learned:

• Adding with 0
• One more and one less
• Doubles
• Near doubles
• 10 more, 10 less

During math groups, students practice the skills and materials we have learned with increased independence.

Responsible Work Choices of the Week

In gym we started hockey! Starting Monday students are invited to bring a hockey stick from home (labeled) to keep at school for the week.

Reads of the Week

Decodable Readers

Looking for levelled reading books to support extra practice at home? Here are the decodable books we use at school. They include a range of levels, with both fiction and non-fiction options. The progression begins with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, moves on to blends and digraphs, and ends with long vowel patterns. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Tea Time Tuesday

Room 8 will be starting their Montessori Tea Time Tuesday next month! It will take place on the first Tuesday of each monthDuring this time students will have the opportunity to practice life skills such as preparing, serving and cleaning up tea service alongside myself. The two flavours I will be providing for tea are peppermint and chamomile. If you wish to send a different tea flavour for your child, I am happy to provide warm water.

Starting next week, students are invited to bring a non-breakable, labeled mug to keep at school (these will be returned at the end of the year). Students will be responsible for cleaning and caring for their mug for the remainder of the year and I will store them. Our first Tea Time will be Tuesday February 3rd. Please email me if you do not want your child to participate, or you have any questions.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Ms. Greenhall
