Hello families,

This week students were thrilled to discover some special new guests in our classroom—mystery eggs waiting to hatch! We investigated different oviparous (egg-laying) animals and predicted what animal may be inside. Each pair of grade 1/2 classes received a different set of eggs.

Candling the Eggs

At the end of the week using our scientific thinking and research, students decided that the eggs belong to the bird family! Ask your child what physical feature of the eggs made them decide this. Hint: texture

The video below also has a fun science experiment at the end that you can try at home with just vinegar and a chicken egg!

Lastly, on Friday I "accidentally" read a chapter in the middle of The Wild Robot instead of starting at the beginning. Coincidentally, it was revealed that the eggs in our classroom belong to geese! We can't wait to meet the goslings in 30ish days! Ask you child what the eggs in the other classrooms are.

We completed our Local Indigenous Plants Jenga. Great work room 8.

From the prairies, we traveled Northeast to the territory of Nunavut. Students began learning about the Inuit peoples and we set up our sketchbook page.

Within our study of Earth's systems, we explored the atmosphere and what living things need air to survive. We learned about the relationship between plants, humans, carbon dioxide, and oxygen. We also investigated the geosphere and examined various types of landforms.

We then explored the Montessori land and water form trays with the matching nomenclature cards.

In literacy we began learning about vowel teams. The rule is "two vowels go a walking, the first one usually does the talking". We focused on A and E vowel teams this week through sorting, decoding, and writing.

Students used their knowledge about the prairies to create descriptive writing, incorporating adjectives and engaging sentence starters

The Grade 1/2 classes have begun a whole-class read-aloud of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Throughout the novel, students will be making meaningful connections to the Science, English Language Arts, and Well-Being curriculum. We began with pre-reading activities to build background knowledge and set the stage for our learning. Our goal is to conclude our learning with a viewing of the film.

This week in gymnastics, we conquered the climber. Next week is our final week - Mission Impossible! We ended gym classes with some mindful breathing, as we always do, to help us relax and reset after all the exciting movement.

In mathematics we learned how to subtract using a number line, focusing on decomposing numbers when solving two-digit subtraction problems. We engaged in 'search and solve' activities around the classroom to get our bodies moving.
