April 4th, 2025

Hello families,

This week we began working on a collaborative art project for an upcoming MAPPS fundraiser. Each class at LBS, along with our sister Montessori schools, is contributing a unique piece that will be auctioned off during Captain John Palliser’s Peace Night on April 24th.

Our class is using this project as a way to wrap up our exploration of the prairies in social studies. Students visited the Kainai Plant Index website to research and select 1–2 plants to feature on their individual Jenga tiles. I’m looking forward to seeing how their designs come together!

For more details about the MAPPS Peace Night and how to attend, please check the end of my blog.

In literacy we shared about our spring breaks through loose parts building, sharing, and recording.

We then began a writing workshop with the next global read out loud book The Real Me, by Minh Le. Students planned, shared, drafted, and revised their writing about an imaginary friend they created.

In math, we began exploring how to represent addition using number lines. Students working with two-digit numbers were introduced to "benchmark numbers"—numbers ending in 0 or 5 that are easier to locate on a number line. By using these benchmarks, students practiced breaking apart (or decomposing) the smaller addend to solve equations more efficiently.

April Calendar

In science we visited the aquarium and took part in a "see, think, wonder" thinking routine. The rainbow trout sure have grown!

In gym, we practiced balancing on the beams and trestles using a variety of techniques at different levels, with a focus on "sticking our landing."
