Hello families,

This week we took advantage of the nice weather on Wednesday to get outside for some snow building and painting!

We celebrated 100 days of school! Students took part in a jar estimation task where they recorded their estimations and then counted the contents of each jar by organizing the items into groups of ten.

To their surprise, all jars had 100 items in them. What a coincidence!

We also compared photos from one hundred years ago and the present day, noticing the differences that have happened over time. Some examples were washing machines, phones, schools, and Calgary's skyline! Students then took part in a free write about what they think the world will look like in a 100 years.

In literacy/social studies we continued with our Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox writing workshop. Students completed the steps: 3. Share and 4. Revise. This included providing and receiving peer feedback, as well as taking part in a self-reflection. We will continue step 5. Final Copy into next week!

In word work we learned about adding "S" to make words plural.

In math students continued to practice adding and subtracting using base ten blocks. We then learned about expanded form addition and subtraction. Within fact fluency we completed a mixed operation math minute.

In S.E.L. (Social Emotional Learning) with Mr. Ripka, students listened to the book The Gratitude Jar,  and wrote down what they are grateful for.

During our aquarium inquiry we explored Alberta waterways and the importance of freshwater for living things. We then predicted what species of local fish are in the tank based on our observations.

On Friday we learned that the fish belong to the trout family. Students thought like scientists as they considered the shape, number of fins, as well as the specific coloring of the fish.

We will see as they continue to grow if we can identify which trout species!

In art we learned about artist Charles McGee who is best known for his contrast art. Inspired by his work, we practiced pattern and line drawing skills to begin a grade 1/2 collaborative art piece!

Reads of the Week - Thank you to all the great guest readers so far! The schedule for March was sent home with students who want to read next month.
