Hello families,

This week in Science we have some new guests living in our Learning Commons. We put on our scientists hats and tried to guess what animal they may be.

At the reveal, students saw little orange eggs in the tank. We then recorded our observations, and estimated how many there are.

On Friday we took another look and to our surprise the eggs had begun to grow and move. We recorded our findings and made more guesses!

In Social Studies we learned about two more Sacred Teachings: Love and Courage which are represented by the eagle and bear respectively. Students made personal reflections in their sketchbooks about times they showed these qualities.

In Health & Wellness we learned about brain anatomy and how the different parts of the brain are responsible for memory, emotions, and higher thinking.

In mathematics we learned about adding and subtracting using ten frames and the Montessori coloured bead bars. We also reviewed the vocabulary for addition and subtraction and added them to our math trees.

In fact fluency we practiced subitizing using dice, fingers, tallies, and pictures. We also took part in addition and subtraction math minutes to practice our mental math skills. After the minute, students are given time to finish the rest of the equations for continued practice!

On Friday we learned about the greater and less than signs.

In literacy we wrote about our weekends. We are working on adding more detail to our sentences and separating our ideas with punctuation!

We then moved into learning about silent e (We often call it "magic e") with the patterns "a_e" and "i_e".

In gym we began soccer! We watched some junior and olympic highlights of soccer games during snack. Next week we have a lacrosse residency. We will return to soccer the week after.

Thank you to those who were able to make it to Family Literacy Day. The kids loved having you in as well as some big buddies to read with.

Reads of the Week

Responsible Work Choices of the Week

Guest Reader Program

We are excited to be participating in the Guest Reader program again this year. This is an optional opportunity for students to read a book aloud to their classmates or to a couple peers. Students can choose a book from home or a book from the classroom to practice. The book should take maximum 5 minutes to read and students should have plenty of practice prior to their reading day. Students can practice reading to their family members, their pets, or even their stuffed animals! If a guest reader is away on their day, we will reschedule as needed.

Here is a reminder of our success criteria:

·   Using different voices (expression)

·   Speaking loud and clear

·   Showing the pictures

·   Reading fluently (this means practicing!)

·   Choosing a “just right” level – this is not a time to challenge yourself!

Stay tuned for the schedule each month if your child chooses to sign up! The February schedule was sent home today.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
