Hello families

This week we created a "Winter Favorites" sketchbook page. Students used pictures and words to show their favorite activities and things about this season.

In Social Studies we wrapped up learning our own identity, culture and community. Student's beautiful art is now on display on the classroom wall!

We then began learning about the 7 Sacred Teachings . These align with the CBE Indigenous Education Holistic Framework as well as the Montessori tenants.  We began with respect, represented by the buffalo.

In literacy we continued practicing sentences, ensuring that we included appropriate punctuation, capitals, spaces, "sky, grass, dirt" letter formation, and that they make sense!

Free Write Friday

In word work we practiced sorting digraphs and blends. Those who were ready began writing the words to go with the pictures. We also took part in a digraph check-in to see where students are in their understanding of these.

A reminder that grade 1s are expected to practice and spell the first 5 words on the list at school. With this being said, I see most students are challenging themselves to spell all the words and some spicy ones during our spelling check-ins. Great work!

In math we practiced fact fluency addition/subtraction within 20, and the "counting on"  or "counting back" strategy. This is where you always start with the the bigger number and count up or down to be more efficient at finding the sum/difference.

We also began learning about how to represent addition and subtraction using pictures and ten frames.

In Science we learned about light energy, specifically natural vs artificial light sources. At the end of the week we wrapped up the unit with a review of the different energy sources we have learned about.

In other Science we took a look at the empty tank in the learning commons and started an inquiry. We wondered about  what may live in it, where there is water init, and what are some of the tubes in it for. Students recorded their questions and sketched what they observed.

In gym it was our last week of hockey. We practice stick handling, blocking, and shooting. Next week we will be starting  soccer!

From the School: Away for the Day

A reminder that all elementary schools follow the “Away for the Day” technology policy. Devices including smartwatches that are brought to school need to be turned off and put away. We encourage students to leave personal belongings safely at home
