Hello families

Happy new year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break. This week our class focused on reconnecting with each other, returning to classroom routines, and reviewing expectations. Over the next few weeks students are completing literacy and mathematics government assessments with me so we have been very busy!

In art students wrapped up their learning about culture and identity with a multimedia art piece. They used crayon resist, including a photo and answers from the questionnaire they completed with their big buddies.

We wrote about our winter breaks after taking part in a sharing circle. Our writing stamina is now 12 minutes! Students implemented the G.U.M. strategy (give it a try, underline it, and move on) which encourages learners to first record their ideas and revise their spelling after.

New Year Resolutions! I noticed lots of great self-reflection and attainable goals students wanted to set for this year.

We also practiced sentence structure, remembering to add punctuation, spaces, and proper writing formation using the sky, grass dirt strategy.

Within word work, students learned about the digraphs wh, ph, ng, and the consonant blend nk.

We had library time to get new books!

In mathematics we reviewed representation through Number of the Days. We then wrapped up representing numbers with an assessment where students chose their 3 strongest ways to represent a number.

In fact fluency we reviewed doubles and adding with 10 before moving on to adding with 9. The rule with 9s is the ones place value is always one less than the addend. We learned some new math games for this rule!

Moving forward in math, we will be exploring different ways to represent addition/subtraction, and different strategies. Here are a couple!
In Science we learned about how different animals hear and looked at some local animals in Alberta. Students created sketchbook pages where they matched scientific vocabulary and pictures.

In gym we continued with hockey and began mini games! Ms. Gierl and I are so impressed with the incredible effort and teamwork we have been seeing so far!
