Hello families,
This week in Social Studies students continued to share about their cultures with the class. I love seeing the confidence and pride each student has shown when sharing. We also explored things that we like and dislike!
In Science students applied their learning about materials and properties to fill out a Venn diagram based on two properties of their choice. We then played a "Magic Bag" guessing game where students described an object using property vocabulary and their partner had to guess what it was!
In writing we put on our teacher hats and compared different writing samples. Students discussed in small groups what feedback they would give for each sample and why. Some of the feedback shared was focused on "sky, grass, dirt" printing, sight word spelling, adding detail to the drawing, and capital letters. They were much more critical teachers than myself!
We applied this feedback to some writing about our weekends or anything else students wanted to write about.
We also started our first free write of the year! During a free write students have the opportunity to be creative and write about anything they wish. I often provide picture prompts to inspire story writing and encourage students to "GUM" (give it a try, underline, and move on)! Our class writing stamina time has started at 10 minutes and they still wanted more. Wow grade 1/2s! We hope to get up to 20- 25 minutes by the end of the year!
For our Words Their Way Word sort we learned about the FLSZ (floss) spelling rule. Ask your child what this is!

In math we continued learning about place value and also completed a place value check in. We then learned how to use the Montessori Bank Game to promote place value practice. Grade 2 students further began learning about expanded form.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunity!
Fill a Sock Fundraiser
Fill a Sock - This year LBS will be caring for our shared community of Calgary through the ‘Fill a Sock’ campaign through The Mustard Seed. This is a collaborative initiative for our learning community! Please ensure that purchased items are in their original packaging, and note that no food items (candy, chocolate etc.), or hand sanitizer and mouthwash will be accepted. Items will be collected from Monday December 2nd until Monday December 16th. Thank you for your support!
We are excited to share that the LBS Winter Event will be taking place on Thursday December 12th. LBS students and their household family members are welcome to attend. With over 360 students at our school, this will help keep the numbers manageable. Thank you for your understanding - we are looking forward to seeing you there!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Ms. Greenhall
