This week we started our first writing workshop! Writing workshops require students to go through a series of steps in their writing to encourage feedback, drafting, and revising strategies. As we continue to explore identity and community in Social Studies, students wrote about their personality traits. Ask your child what their "best part of me" trait is!
We also completed another writing piece this week! Inspired by the book Leaf Man, students created their own leaf creatures and used sentence frames to guide their writing. Grade two students took on a mentorship role and supported the grade 1s by providing specific and helpful feedback. Our current writing focus in grade 1 is spaces, sky-grass-dirt printing, and lowercase letter formation. Our focus in grade 2 is sentence organization, proper punctuation, and spelling with increased phonemic awareness.
We completed a short vowel check-in for each grade. With the learning goal being short vowel sounds, words were marked correct if students included the correct vowel in their inventive spelling.
During the Daily L.A. station "read with teacher", groups began reading books with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, CVCC/VCC words, or words with digraphs such as "ch" in them.
In mathematics we completed skip counting on a 100s or 150s chart. Students completed a self-reflection to demonstrate their understanding.
We also practiced mixed skip counting starting at different numbers with an increasing or decreasing rule!
Math Games and Materials
We completed our Thankful Pies from last week. They turned out great!
