Hello families,

On Monday we did our Terry Fox run! It was great to see our school come together for such an important cause. We also completed our Terry Fox shape poems.

In literacy we continued with our daily printing practice in the morning and reviewed the letters N and O. We also used the Montessori moveable alphabet to create words with the letters we have covered so far. I am so impressed with student's inventive spelling as they try to sound words out in their writing! Ask your child what the Animated Literacy actions are for these letters.

We also celebrated the first week of Autumn by creating a "Fall Favorites" sketchbook page using the sketchnoting technique.

If you are looking for an extra literacy resource for at home please email me for a copy of the Making Words program. This program is a game-based activity that uses moveable letters to help support phonological development.

Here are the UFLI resources again if you want to extend your practice at home.

In mathematics we wrapped up patterns by creating a sketchbook page. Students were challenged to create different patterns using a variety of attributes such as color, shape, and size. They also labeled their "pattern core/rule".

Within fact fluency we learned about "doubles", played math games, and explored the Montessori math materials in more depth.

In Science we began learning about the scientific method and how to conduct science experiments. This includes hypothesizing, observing and recording results. Our experiment was mixing colors and reviewing primary vs secondary colors.

In Social Studies we honored Orange Shirt day through conversations, reading books and watching age appropriate videos about residential schools. We then brainstormed ideas to create empathy poems. Students also learned about the Four Sacred Medicines and smudging.  We smudged as a whole class, discussing how to set an intention when doing so.

We finished the week with a garden sit spot!
