Hello families,

This week we began a Social Studies inquiry abut identity. Students set up their sketchbook pages and we began with the "My Name" puzzle piece. Your child may be asking you about their name over the weekend - What does my name mean? - Why did you give me this name? Feel free to write it on a paper to send to school if you think they will forget.

In Science we began learning about Earth systems. Students have buddied up with a student in the other grade for this unit. So far we have learned about the 4 different spheres: Atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, as well as some Alberta landforms.

Here are some of the great questions students have come up with so far:
  • Why do we not feel the Earth rotating?
  • How do we not run out of water on Earth?
  • Why does the atmosphere not go into space?
  • How has life evolved over Earth?

Some of the famous Alberta landforms we learned about about are Dinosaur Provincial Park, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, and Woodland Buffalo National Park.

In writing students took part in a free write about their Spring Break or a topic of their choice.  We also worked on capitalization within sentences.

The grade 1/2 classes have started Art with Ms. Davies on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During art for the next several weeks, classroom teachers will work with specific students on literacy intervention while Ms. Davies teaches art. We have been learning about maps and the technique of stamping.

Check out some of the Daily L.A. tasks students chose.

We practiced silent reading to explore some of the new books in our room!

Upon student request, we also started reading the third book of the My Father's Dragon trilogy called The Dragons of Blueland.  Students will have a choice to follow along as I read on the map or just listen.

In math we practiced our fact fluency by playing a doubles game. Students were also introduced to a new station during math groups called "fact fluency" to develop their mental math skills.

We completed a quick review of stacking and addition word problems.

We then moved into subtraction, reviewing the vocabulary as well as using pictures, ten frames, and number lines.

In gym we finished with badminton and played cooperatives games. Gymnastics starts next week! Please ensure your child is dressed to participate.

Fish Creek Field Trip
Our field trip is now rescheduled to Thursday April 25th due to the solar eclipse on Monday.
