Hello families,

This week in Art we completed our Picasso inspired self portraits. They look amazing! As we discussed and interpreted some of Picasso's art. students came up with some great questions that they would want to ask him if they could:

  • What inspired you to paint?
  • What kinds of shapes did you like using the best?
  • How long did each painting take you?
  • How long was the blue period?

In math we completed a March calendar using number lines to place numbers before and after. We also played a game called "Snowball Fight" to develop our addition and subtraction fact fluency. The kids loved it!

We moved on from adding on an open number line to addition using expanded form and the beginning of standard algorithm (stacking).

We started up math groups again this year! Much like Daily L.A., math groups allow students to participate in a series of independant and collaborative stations to develop their mathematical skills through games, Montessori materials, technology, and fact fluency.

Here is the login information for our Khan Academy classroom if you want your child to practice at home. There are literacy and math activities on this app!

In writing we learned about different types of sentences as well as when to capitalize. Ask your child about different sentences and M.I.N.T.S.

Here is the Words Their Way sorts from this week.

Within our novel study, we read Chapters 5-9 of My Fathers Dragon.

In Science we delved into our next inquiry: Over and Under the Snow. Students will be applying their scientific skills to research how a specific local animal survives in the winter as well as their adaptations. The grade 2s took part in some mentorship by showing the grade 1s how to login to Pebble Go and helped them get started on their research. Mentorship is a great way for the older students to strengthen their own understanding of concepts and processes!

Ask your child what animal they chose as well as what some of their physical (body) and behavioural (doing) adaptations are!

Here are the outcomes we are working on throughout this inquiry:

Grade 1/2:

  • I can ask questions to focus research topics
  • I can gather factual information on topics from various sources
  • I can use organizational tools to record my ideas
  • I can record factual information through messages that include images, words, and sentences

Student-Led Conferences
Bookings for student-led conferences are now open. Please ensure your child attends with you as they will be leading the sharing of their work with you. Conferences offer the opportunity for you to visit your child's classroom as well as the music room and the book fair in the Learning Commons. If you are having difficulty booking, please call the office and they will be happy to help you out. I look forward to seeing you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Home Reading Program

The Grade 1/2 team is continuing with the Home Reading program this year. This is an optional program that is best for  readers who would benefit from extra practice at home. Each week students would take home two short levelled reading books to practice at home with you. They would then exchange them at school once they have read them several times throughout the week. Students will have some choice in the books they choose to take home. Please let me know if you would like your child to take part in this program.

Hello families,

Looking to shop for books online through Scholastic year round? I have set up a scholastic account for our class! Happy reading!
