Hello families,

This week we completed our math project "The Book Fair Shopping Spree". During this project students applied their understanding of addition strategies, representation, as well as developed their financial literacy skills of budgeting and keeping a running total.

We also continued with practicing standard algorithm (stacking) and were introduced to word problems.

Students can use any math strategy to solve their word problems, but we discussed how some are more appropriate and efficient for 2 digit addition versus 1 digit.

Lucky the leprechaun visited our classroom on Monday and was up to no good! Unfortunately we did not catch them in our traps, but they did leave students some gold coins! What a mess!

We also watched a presentation from our U of C student nurses about resiliency and growth mindset. This included a few games, role playing, and a read-out-loud.

This lesson tied in nicely with our viewing of My Father's Dragon  on ThursdayWe worked towards the following learning outcomes as we watched the film:

- Understanding a growth versus a fixed mindset
- Identifying story elements within a story such as character, setting, and plot
- Examining the narrator’s contribution to a story or message
- Building perseverance and resiliency when problem solving

In Word Work we went though the UFLI lessons on "_ce,  _ge, and _es" spelling patterns. I am happy to see many students applying their understanding of the "magic e" to sound out the long vowels in these words.

In Writing/Science students shared their "Who Am I?" writing with two of their peers, received feedback to incorporate into their final copy, and published their writing. This writing along with their art will be shared with you at conferences. Take a look at some of their work below (art samples do not match with the writing).
