Hello families,
This week in writing we continued with a new Writing Workshop: How to Build a Snowman! The focus of this workshop is on procedural writing and making our writing clear through specific detail and sentenced steps. Students drafted their ideas and got peer feedback. Before moving onto their next step in the workshop, students put their skills to the test by instructing their big buddies to build a snowman!
Here are the Words Their Way sorts students did this week.

Groups completed their composting posters and they look great! This was a great opportunity for students to practice their collaboration and compromising skills. Here is a game we played from the Calgary Compost website: Waste Sorting Game.
We also learned about onomatopoeias (sound words). Since our next Scared Teaching was Beaver - Wisdom, we watched some clips of beavers in nature and students wrote down the words they heard.
In math we continued representing addition in all the different ways we have learned this year, and number bonds using addition and subtraction. We also began learning/reviewing subtraction in more depth. For our February calendar students used subtraction to make the "difference" for each day.
On Wednesday we celebrated LBS Literacy Day! I loved seeing all the awesome costumes inspired by student's favourite books. Here are some we read this week. The February guest reader schedule went home on Monday for students who wanted to sign up!
Lake Bonavista School is deeming February as LITERACY MONTH!! On January 31, 2024, Rooms 2 and 3 led us through an assembly that focused on the importance of developing reading and writing skills. In addition to the assembly, Room 2 and 3 have also planned a variety of literacy activities that can be done at school and at home, including a literacy Bingo, a Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) week, creative writing competitions, and literacy games to support learning, as well as important information about our upcoming Family Literacy Day. These events and literacy based projects will be taking place from February 1-29.
Have a great weekend,
