Hello families,

This week in Science we explored what migration is and why animals do it. Ask your child: What are the 3 main reasons animals migrate? We were surprised to discover many animals do this and travel very far!

In word work we reviewed digraphs and competed a spelling check in at the beginning of the week.

In writing we compared writing samples in small groups. Students gave feedback and decided which samples are exemplars and non-exemplars. We then moved into free writing.

On Wednesday for the 100th day of school students responded to the writing prompt "If I had 100 _ I would..."

We began our novel study of My Fathers Dragon. Students started by predicting what the book is about based on the front cover.

Here are the Words Their Way sorts students did this week based on their literacy level.

In math we continued learning about representing addition on a 100s chart as well as using a number line. The important thing with both strategies is decomposing numbers based on their place value and ensuring we include 0 as a place holder when writing 10s and 100s.

On Thursday our school experienced a traditional lion dance performance. After the assembly one of the grade 3/4 students who was in the performance came to show us a lion costume up close and answer students' questions. What a wonderful experience to celebrate the lunar new year!

On Friday we took part in a "Food Truck Frenzy" with our big buddies! They presented their food truck projects to us and we received money to "spend" on their menu items. What a fun way to develop our financial literacy skills!

We also celebrated Family Literacy day on Friday by reading with family members or a big buddy. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
