Hello families,

This week in Social Studies and Science we learned about the first Scared Teaching: respect. Students finished up their buffalo labeling and created a sketchbook page to describe how they show respect for people, animals and nature.

We then looked at the second Sacred Teaching: love, which is represented by the eagle. Studying the behaviour and adaptations of an eagle, our class asked the question: why does the eagle represent love? After investigating how eagles create their nests and care for their young, it is clear that they are incredibly loving creatures.

In literacy we started a new Writing Workshop inspired by the books I am One, and ABCs of Feelings. Keeping with curricular ties to understanding the self, social emotional learning, and wellness,  students are making connections to their identity as they move through this workshop.

We also completed our learning cycle about adjectives, ending with a summative assessment where students described an ice cream sundae!

During Daily L.A. students were introduced to the "word work" station. Each group practiced with me to ensure they understand how to use the Montessori green card material and moveable alphabet before working within their group. Our first word work focus was the "th" digraph, next week will be "ck".

In math we filled out a December calendar using equations. Each day was a ''sum" and students created an addition equation to make that sum. Grade 1s practiced adding with 10, and Grade 2s demonstrated any equation of their choice.

As we move into addition, we began to utilize our understanding of number lines to "jump" to find the sum.

Students also learned a new game to practice place value using dice shakers! One thing many students are practicing is to always make sure the ones place value is on their farthest right side.

We spent some time exploring some of the other math games we have learned so far this year as well.

In gym we started basketball! Ms. Gierl and I were  blown away by the dribbling and passing skills students already had. We are looking forward to further developing these skills over the next couple weeks.

Our first Tea Time Tuesday of the year was a success! Thank you for sending in a mug for your child as we practice this tradition until the end of the school year. Some of the practical life skills students will be working on during this time are:

  • taking turns
  • preparing tea alongside Ms. Greenhall
  • serving tea to themselves
  • cleaning and caring for their own mug
  • engaging in peer conversations

Our next Tea Time will be on Tuesday January 9th in the new year. Please feel free to send a different tea bag for your child if they did not like peppermint or chamomile options that are served.

On Thursday we spent some time with our big buddies to create a banner for our food drive. Thank you to those who have already sent in a donation.

Here are some responsible work choices students made this week.

Room 8 Sock Exchange

During the month of December LBS is focusing on the Montessori tenet of Gratitude. The Grade 1/2 ‘s will be holding a Winter Sock Exchange to build community and gratitude within their class. The students will practice their fine motor skills to wrap, writing and artistic skills to create a card and gratitude when receiving a ‘fun’ pair of new socks!

We ask that if you are able to, to please send in a new/unworn pair of kids socks with a fun patter for your child to give to classmate by December 18th.  If you have any questions or are interested in donating extra pairs of socks to please contact your classroom teacher.
