Hello families,

Our week started with the field trip to the zoo which was amazing! Thank you to those who volunteered to make the day such a success

In Science students took some time to complete their animal sketching and labelling within their field journals from the zoo. We then did a gallery walk to share our great work with our peers.

In literacy we practiced making words that have the letter "u" and "i" in them. Grade 1 students then created simple sentences with sentence frames, underlining those vowels within their writing.  Grade 2s were introduced to paragraph writing. We discussed that paragraphs are 5-7 sentences in length, on one topic, and detailed.

Students also received literacy folders where their tools, writing book and new personal dictionaries (Words, Words, Words book) will be stored. Grade 1s will be receiving their personal dictionaries when our school order is delivered.

During Daily L.A. groups worked with me on blending short vowels, digraphs, long vowels, and vowel teams depending on their reading level.

In math we delved into creating our own number lines. Students applied their skip counting skills to decide where to start their number line in order to encompass the target number.

Wrapping up place value, students learned an expanded form math game and were introduced to their final project, a Place Value Scavenger Hunt. Students were given their "just right level" and had to search within flyers for different place values. Those who got a more difficult level also had to represent the number in expanded form.

In Social Studies we began our learning/reviewing of the 7 Sacred Teachings. As we go through these teachings students will be demonstrating their understanding through different sketchbook pages in their journals. With this concept not being new to grade 2s, they will be expected to extend and demonstrate their understanding in a deeper way. Here are the curricular goals we are working towards:

Grade 1:
  • I can describe the connections we have to Indigenous and diverse cultures found in our communities
  • I can explore ways in which Indigenous peoples and diverse cultural groups contributed to the origins and evolutions of our community over time
Grade 2:
  • I can describe how the presence of Indigenous origins is reflected in the community today
  • I can explore the cultural characteristics, teachings, and practices of Indigenous communities

We will be approaching this learning through a scientific and social/emotional lens as we learn about each teaching, the animal that represents it, and that animal's attributes and adaptations.

Thank you to those students who helped with gardening club as we got our new planters  ready for the snow!

On Friday we ended the week with a walking field trip with room 10. Students used petri dishes and magnifying glasses to explore different parts of nature. Many students noticed how small and sparkly the snow and frost was!
