Hello families,

This week we spent some time preparing for the Winter Solstice Event. In the season of building community and gratitude, the grade 1/2 classes worked together to make dog and cat treats to sell as a fundraiser for the Calgary Humane Society.

We also graphed data of adoptable animals from the Calgary Humane Society. Grade 1s created pictographs, and Grade 2s bar graphs.

In literacy we continued with our Writing Workshop. Grade 2s demonstrated mentorship by supporting grade 1s in reading their sentences frames and helping them refer to their graphic organizer. They also gave them feedback in their "sky, grass, ground" printing. The grade 1s did great receiving and incorporating the feedback!

Grade 2s then referred to their own graphic organizers to create sentences, without sentence  frames, about their chosen trait. We really focused on stretching our ideas out with supporting details.

In Physical Education we played "Make a Snowman" which is similar to a game we played around halloween. Instead of running a lap though, students dribbled a lap with a basketball.

During Daily L.A. students began their word work station with their group. The focus this week was "ck". In the spelling practice station, students wrote their words in alphabetical order. Also there will be no spelling check in next week!

In math we learned about greater than, less than, and equal to, using the rule "The alligator eats the greater!"

At the end of the week each grade completed a math check in to see where they are at in their number sense knowledge of place value, number lines, skip counting, and comparing numbers. We will be looking at placing numbers on an open number line next week.

In Science and Social Studies students completed their love sketchbook pages represented by the eagle. We then moved onto the third Sacred Law, courage, represented by the bear.

In art we created snowman art inspired by the book Snowman at Night.
