Hello families,

This week we spent time preparing for our Remembrance Day assembly. For our art we analyzed a variety of Remembrance Day poetry and added meaningful words from the stanzas to their matching silhouettes. Students did a wonderful job on their art, singing, speaking and demonstrating to the school how to show respect on such an important day. We are so proud of how our students and school have come together to honour and support our veterans.

In math this week we completed our November calendars. Students not only filled out the numbers, but also represented them using base ten blocks. Grade 2s further wrote them in expanded form.

We started some ''MART" (math art) for students to demonstrate their understanding of place value and base ten materials in a creative way.

In literacy we completed our alphabet review. Ask your child what all the sounds and actions are for each letter! For a challenge, ask them what a juicy adjective may be that starts with each letter.

To further our learning about using "juicy words" in our writing, we discussed adjectives and how we can use our 5 senses to describe the things in our world.  We began brainstorming as a class some not so strong adjectives and used an online thesaurus to pick some stronger ones. Students then began recording their favourite ones (and any others) in their sketchbooks.

In Daily L. A. students created rainbow words to practice their spelling words of the week. Other stations included using Montessori materials,  games, reading a book together and working on specific literacy goals with Ms. Greenhall.

In Science the grade 1/2 teachers regrouped students by grade. They will be learning about matter, materials, measurement and scientific observations within their grade group. My grade 2 group looked at natural vs man made materials and ways that they are used in everyday and Indigenous practices. Grade 2s were then tasked with designing and building a bird's nest using only natural materials.  Grade 1s scientifically explored the 4 sacred medicines. Ask your child who their science group teacher is and what they have been learning about!
