Hello families,

We had a short and productive week! We completed our place value math art. Students were asked to review their art before going over in marker to ensure that it matched their number and representation .

We then began creating Base Ten Structures as a parallel math task.

In literacy we used the UFLI mats to create words using the vowels A and I. Depending on their level, students practiced encoding and decoding CVC words, or words with long vowels and inflected endings in them.

Students also completed their 5 Senses of a Poppy page. As a class we used an online thesaurus to come up with strong adjectives to describe a poppy.

In Science groups my grade 2s began by looking at the different materials that objects are made of and went on a classroom scavenger hunt. We then learned about the variety of properties a material can have such as transparent, opaque, malleable, and reflective.

Grade 1s worked with their teacher on exploring different properties of materials such as stretching, cutting, breaking, and measuring. Science groups will continue into the beginning of next week.

Guest Reader

Hello room 8 families,

We are excited to be bringing back our classroom Guest Reader program. This is an optional opportunity for students to read a book aloud to their classmates. Students can choose a book from home or a book from the classroom to practice. The book should take 3-5 minutes to read and students should have plenty of practice prior to their reading day. Students can practice reading to their family members, their pets, or even their stuffed animals! Students who do not want to read in front of the whole class can always read to a partner in the library instead. If a guest reader is away on their day, we will reschedule as needed. A calendar was sent home today for November.

Here is a reminder of our success criteria.

·      Using different voices (expression)
·      Speaking loud and clear
·      Showing the pictures
·      Reading fluently (this means practicing!)
·      Choosing a “just right” level – this is not a time to challenge yourself!
