Hello families,

This week we jumped into Autumn with a focus on Science and Social Studies. We learned about the word ethnobotany, and how plants are used  for so many things in our world! One of the ways plants are used is for dyes and pigments. We put this to the test by trying out some rubbings from Ms. Greenhall's garden!

We continued our Indigenous learning within the Medicine wheel as well as discussed National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Orange Shirt Day (September 30th). Using age appropriate language, we had conversations about what the day is about. It was great to hear students reflecting on this learning with empathy, acceptance, and openness.

On Thursday LBS honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with an assembly put on by room 12 and 17. Our class continued these conversations in our room and planted tobacco seeds gifted to LBS from the Niitsitapi Learning Centre. We are excited to hopefully see them grow!

In math we delved into number patterns, specifically skip counting. Within a 20s, 50s, or 100s chart (depending on their just right level) students practiced their counting. We also learned two new math games called "Make that Number" and "Dots and Boxes". These games are great for number recognition and simple addition!

In literacy we reviewed the letters O, D, C, U, G and B. Ask your child what the sounds and actions are for these letters! For grade 1s that were ready for a challenge, they began using sentence frames. Grade 2s continued working on making more interesting sentences by adding juicy details and different sentence starters.

In Daily L.A. each group has had a chance to "listen to reading" on EPIC. If you are able, please send headphones in for your child. This will help keep the classroom quiet and limit distractions for other learners. Here are a few literacy materials students explored during this week.

In art we are slowly creating the art for our sketchbook covers. Stay tuned!

Our class also learned some new cooperative games! Some of the skills we are practicing include turn taking, fair play, communication skills, and problem solving. Many  of our cooperative games also support the development of literacy and math skills!

We saw our big buddies two times this week!

Check out some of the responsible work choices students made throughout the week.

Have a wonderful long weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
