September 1st, 2023

Hello room 8 families,

Welcome to my blog! Our couple days back at school were a lot of fun. It was nice to see familiar and new faces in the room. I was so impressed with the leadership I saw from the grade 2s and amazing listening skills and willingness from the grade 1s. It is going to be a great year!

Students spent some time familiarizing themselves with the room, exploring the materials and reviewing classroom expectations. We also learned a new math game called "What's My Number".

Soft Entry
On Tuesday, teachers will be outside to meet students in the morning from 8:00-8:10. Starting on Wednesday morning, we will begin our soft entry in the morning. When students arrive at school they will come in our door as they arrive at school. Doors will be open from 8:00-8:10. Students will be engaged in a morning activity and instructional time will begin at 8:10am. If a student is late, please go to the front office doors.

Absences
If your child is going to be absent, please make sure to contact the office via phone or email. I would also appreciate being cc'd on the email so I am kept in the loop!

Snack
During snack time students will be using placemats in their space as part of our Montessori practical-life learning. Students who use our classroom mats are responsible for cleaning them after use. Our laminated placemats don't hold out very well so we are asking for a placemat from home if possible. Something simple that can fit in your child's lunch kit is perfect - even a tea towel works! The placemat is meant to travel to and from school each day. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Shoes and Water Bottles
Please make sure your child has clean indoor shoes that they can put on independently to keep at school. Indoor and outdoor shoes need to be appropriate for physical activity as some days we have physical education outside! Students are more than welcome to keep a water bottle at school in our classroom. Please ensure their name is on any personal items to prevent them getting lost.

Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun
At LBS we like to celebrate students' birthdays with the Montessori Walk Around the Sun.  If it is your child's birthday month, you will receive a copy of a Google slideshow for you to add photos about your child each year of their life. This  is optional and you are more than welcome to add on to the slideshow from last year if you made one. *Please  note birthday treats cannot be shared with the whole class as a LBS rule.*

Volunteers
I truly value our volunteers offering their time to support our students inside and outside of the classroom. If you are interested in volunteering please ensure you have a valid police clearance through the CBE as well as have signed the annual volunteer form for 2023/2024. Please note that police clearance can take quite a few weeks to come through so getting it done earlier in the year ensures you will have it for upcoming volunteer opportunities. Please contact the office for more information about getting a CBE police check and signing the annual form.  We will be welcoming volunteers into the school in October!

Healthy Hunger Lunches

School Council organizes Healthy Hunger lunches for grade 1-6 students. This is an optional program. Please visit the website https://healthyhunger.ca/ to set up your child’s account and view the list of lunches being offered. If you have any questions or need support please contact funlunchlbs@gmail.com. Orders are due in 5 days before the lunch, our first lunch is September 14th. If you are interested in volunteering for Healthy Hunger lunches, please contact the funlunchlbs@gmail.com or our volunteer coordinator at lbsvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com

Have a wonderful long weekend,

Melissa Greenhall
