Hello families,

We finished off the week by having our guest reader and snack in the garden. It sure is coming to life after all the rain we have been having!

In Social Studies we finished up our final learning task about Iqaluit. Students created northern light art and added an igloo with key words to sum up Iqaluit.

In Science we moved into learning about animals! Students started a research project and are working towards the following outcomes:

Grade 1:

  • Identify the requirements of animals to maintain life; i.e., air, food, water, shelter, space; and recognize that we must provide these for animals in our care.
Grade 2:
  • Describe the general structure and life habits of small crawling and flying animals; e.g., insects, birds, worms, rabbits; and apply this knowledge to interpret local species that have been observed.
  • Recognize that small animals, like humans, have homes where they meet their basic needs of air, food, water, shelter and space; and describe any special characteristics that help the animal survive in its home.
Students first went onto Pebble Go and looked at the wide variety of animals they could choose from. Once they had a few favourites, each student choose the one that they wanted to research. Pebble Go is a great website because it gives the option to read the text out-loud to students, and is set up for young researchers!

Here are a few research sheets so far!

We also planted our germinated seeds in the tower garden with Mrs. Green's class. Students loved seeing the grade 3/4's tower garden already blooming.

In word work we learned about "Bossy R". Students enjoyed watching this Story Bots video and making pirate sounds like Bossy R!

I will also be posting the Words of the Week on my blog until the end of the year. These will be the new words for the following week. Students are encouraged to practice these sight words at home as well as during our morning task and Daily L.A. block. We will be doing a "spelling check in" of these words each Friday!

In math we began learning about subtracting using place value. This is often referred to as stacking or standard algorithm. Many students were surprised that they could subtract larger numbers than they are used to using this method!

We also discussed the importance of using 0 as a place value holder, but it is not needed when in the front of numbers.

Students also continued working on their Wanted 3D shape posters. They will be assessed on their ability to identify 3D shapes and their attributes.

Our first netball session went great! Our class was so respectful to the guest coach. We have two more sessions which are on Monday and Thursday next week.

On Friday the grade 1/2s got together to view a presentation about brushing their teeth. Each student received their own toothbrush and  toothpaste to take home from Colgate.

Every year in honour of Alberta Forest Week, grade 1 students receive a spruce tree seedling. If your child is in grade one, they would have received a tree on Friday. Visit www.grade1tree.ca to register your tree with the program!

Check out some of the responsible work choices made this week.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
