April 28th, 2023

 Hello families,

This week we started with celebrating Earth Day which was on Saturday April 22. We watched a beautiful video about Earth, as well as one describing how we can help make it a better place. Students then created a sketchbook page illustrating the things they love about Earth.

Here are more final copies of our "What's in My Pocket?" writing.

We also began learning about alliteration!  As a class we looked at some funky ice cream flavours from local stores. Then we created our own alliteration flavours!

In math we continued to practice subtraction on a number line. Students are really beginning to master this skill! A shortcut we learned is breaking up the tens and ones, and jumping by tens first.

In shapes, we delved into learning about 3D shapes. We looked at them using vocabulary such as sides, vertices, and faces. Students then tried building them as a S.T.E.M. challenge.

For the next two weeks we have the Riley Park and Grasslands nature kits from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Students spent some time sketching and labeling them.

In Social Studies we explored the lifestyle of people living in Iqaluit.
We watched a tourist vlog, and recorded our ideas including a school that is designed to look like whale blubber!

In Science we moved into our final unit: plants and animals! We began by setting up a plant journal in our field books, then we placed some bean seeds in plastic bags with wet paper towel. We will be recording changes throughout the next two weeks!

In gym we took part in a "Mission Impossible" gymnastic obstacle course and students demonstrated their great gymnastics skills!

Our last Artist in Residence session with Sharon was great. Thank you to those parents who were able to volunteer!

We took our learning from patterns in nature and applied them to our walking field trip with Ms. Romanko's class on Tuesday!

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Netball Forms Coming Home on Monday

Lake Bonavista School is participating in netball from May 8th until May 16th in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website (www.netballalberta.com): “Netball is an exciting, fast and skillful game of fair contest: It is a game in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball. Players have specified areas in which they can move.”

Parent Council has graciously provided the funding to bring this event into our school.  Consent forms will be sent home with your child on Monday May 1st.  Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event! Forms are DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 2023!

Thank you,

Active Living Team
