Hello families,

This week in Science we delved into the prototype and testing part of the design thinking process. As students began testing and adjusting their prototypes, many  realized that they needed to add stabilizing features so the load (gluestick) didn't fall off!

We were also so lucky to have a parent build a wooden boat model for each student in our class! The class discussed how the elastic band creates tension, which then causes the boat propeller to move the boat when released. The class loved seeing the boats move in the water all by themselves! *While we used acrylic paint, I would suggest adding a clear coat on your child's boat before putting them in the water*

Here are some of our in-process, and finished devices that float. Great S.T.E.M. thinking room 8!

In Social Studies we looked at the landscape and forms of transportation within Iqaluit. Students learned about the word ''tundra'' and how the climate and land cannot sustain trees in this area of Canada. We also learned about dog sleds, snowmobiles and different types of boats used in this area!

Our class also loaned some nature kits from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. This week we looked at the Riparian Forest and Nosehill Park kits as a responsible work choice. Students loved looking at the footprint molds and skull replicas of animals in the different areas. We will have two new kits starting next week!

In writing workshop students revised their "What's in My Pocket" writing.

Students then created their final copies. Take a look at the ones completed so far!

In math we continued learning about subtracting on a number line and practicing our basic fact skills through math groups.

Within exploring shapes we looked at the vocabulary ''sides'' and ''vertices'' of 2D shapes. Next week we will be moving into 3D shapes.

We also did a STEM challenge to create as many 2D shapes as possible!

In gymnastics we learned about safety on the climber and reviewed the rule ''three on the tree''. This is a great skill to practice with any controlled climbing inside/outside of school. The kids loved this part of gymnastics! Next week we will be doing a Mission Impossible obstacle course.

We are experts at Tea Time Tuesday now!

Our Artist in Residence session with Sharon went great! The whole school Is collaborating to create art pieces to hang in our school based on patterns in nature. Our class is focusing on branching patterns. We have one more session next Monday!

Check out some of the responsible work choices made this week.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Guest Reader

Hello room 8 families,

We are excited to be bringing back our classroom Guest Reader program. This is an optional opportunity for students to read a book aloud to their classmates. Students can choose a book from home or a book from the classroom to practice. The book should take 5-7 minutes to read and students should have plenty of practice prior to their reading day. Students can practice reading to their family members, their pets, or even their stuffed animals! Students who are do not want to read in front of the whole class can always read to a partner in the library instead. If a guest reader is away on their day, we will reschedule as needed. Here is a reminder of our success criteria:

·     Using different voices (expression)
·      Speaking loud and clear
·      Showing the pictures
·      Reading fluently (this means practicing!)
·      Choosing a “just right” level – this is not a time to challenge yourself!

Please note that when in a topic you may need to switch between "grade 1" and "grade 2" to reflect your child's needs. Happy learning!
