Hello families,

This week we completed the last Scared Teaching which is the Turtle, representing truth. Students tied together their learning by creating some meaningful art depicting one of the Sacred Teachings that they connect with the most.

We reviewed all the teachings through the book We Learn From the Sun ,  By David Bouchard.

Students provided examples of when they were truthful through class discussions and within their sketchbook.

We celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday (a day late!) by reading several books and taking part in an eye spy and graphing activity!

We also learned that most of our class was born in the year of the sheep and monkey, and Miss. Greenhall the year of the rooster!

For our literacy opening task students who have completed their yellow folders (printing or writing stamina practice) have now moved onto word work tic-tac-toe. For this task students choose 3 sight words from our morning message on Monday and these are their words for the week. Each day they get to choose an activity to do with their words. Once they get a blackout they get to start again with a clear board!

We are still learning about all the choices!

Students learned about the digraphs WH and PH! They noticed that these two are tricky because they sound like the letter "W" and "F". We brainstormed words that have these in them . Many students were surprised about the word "elephant"!

Ask your child what the animated literacy actions are for these digraphs!

Thank you to those families who were able to join us for Family Literacy Day on Friday. Here is link of some literacy games you can also do at home!

In math we continued to develop our understanding of addition within number bonds, looking at equations that require students to work backwards to find an addend instead of the sum.  Students utilized the math racks as well as their fact fluency to solve the questions.

We then began to review the addition strategies we have learned and practice them within math equations.

On Thursday all the grade 1/2s had a boardgames afternoon. During this time students developed their skills in:
  • collaboration
  • problem solving
  • sportsmanship
  • turn taking
  • math and literacy
* There were some picture cards from a Monopoly Discover game that were misplaced. It would be greatly appreciated if you could check your child's backpack or their game box if they brought one,  just in case they ended up in these places. Thank you!*

In Science we visited the Learning Commons to see our little friends in the aquarium. They sure have changed from last week! Our class  took part in a "zooming In" thinking routine and labeled parts of the animal based on their predictions.

Check out the responsible work choices students made this week!

Valentines Day
As a school we will not be doing an individual Valentine exchange. Instead each class will be taking part in activities focusing on spreading kindness. For Valentine’s day in Room 8 we will be participating in Buddy Valentines and a small community initiative. These will occur during school time and do not require preparation at home. I will include more details leading up to the day! *Please note treats can not be shared at school, but you are welcome to send a special  treat with your child the day of!*

Tea Time Tuesday
A reminder to please send a labeled mug by Tuesday for our first Tea Time Tuesday if you wish for you child to participate.

Report Cards

Report cards will be available on Monday online. Please note that our report card stems have changed a little from last year, as well as the Mathematics and English Language and Literature curriculum. You will no longer see the results reporting (Citizenship, Character, and Personal Development) on the report card. Students will receive a grade between 1-4 for each report card stem. If your child is not meeting grade level expectations (a "1" grade) I will have contacted you already - this will never be a surprise!

Have  a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
