December 2, 2022

Hello families,

This week we took part in some more Science experiments looking at colour. One included using skittles to paint and demonstrate our understanding of primary and secondary colours. Students were then asked to create all the colours in their colour wheels to finish off our learning about colour.

In math we continued to learn about tallies and played "Tally Bingo".

Applying our knowledge of tallies, we delved back into data collection and graphing. We learned about parts of a bar graph and how to take data from a T chart and turn it into a bar graph.

In writing we are continuing to learn about sensory language and how we can make our writing more interesting by adding "juicy" words. Students learned about a thesaurus, and brainstormed sensory words in a class activity.

On Monday we took part in some "On the Weekend" writing which we will continue to do each week. Students also took part in a free write and explored some new literacy materials.

We also learned about Magic E and it's powers to make vowels say their name!

Word Work Groups

In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters C, H, F and D using the Animated Literacy actions. We then cut and sorted pictures that start with these letters. Ask your child about the actions and sounds for C, H, F and D.

In Ms. Lacour's Word Work Group students have been learning about vowels. This week we continued with short "A" and looked at the "AP" and "AG" word families. We then sorted pictures to match the corresponding words. Ask your child about words in the "AP" and "AG" family

In Ms. Midgley's word work group we reviewed Sh and Ch. We sorted pictures that start with H, SH or CH. We have become masters of SH and CH! Next week we will be learning two new digraphs!

In Ms. Gierl & Ms. Green's groups, students continued their exploration of long and short A sounds with a focus on "a, a_e, ai and oddball words." Ask your child about how the letters e & i might change the short a sound to the long a sound!

In Ms. Romanko's word work group we worked with the blends sn, sc and sw. Pictures were sorted with the rule given and then the students were to create their own rule for a partner to solve. A small group also worked on how to use plural or past tense endings in sentences

As we continue to learn about Indigenous ways of knowing, we have been focusing on the South portion of the medicine wheel which includes cedar and the heart-to belong. We read Trudy's Rock Story and discussed things that make our hearts happy. While ideas may include some objects, the focus was on deeper connections like people, animals, and experiences.

Students then created their own Healing Stone designs.

During Mindfulness we learned the "Rainstorm" and "Snake Breath" focusing exercises. Students especially love the rainstorm one!

I am looking for a few volunteers next week to help do some prep work for a craft. Please send me an email if you are interested in coming in to help!

Have  a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Listen to Reading

The Daily LA Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students if headphones aren't used. If you are able to send headphones for your child to keep in their cubby at school, that would be very helpful.
