November 4th, 2022

Hello families,

This week we welcomed the snow with open gloves! It was great to see students coming to school dressed for the weather and excited to play outside. Students are working on taking care of their belongings and ensuring they are placed safe in their backpack or on their coat hook when inside.

During Halloween on Monday, we spent the morning rotating through stations between each grade 1/2 teacher. Some stations included spooky literacy activities, math games, social learning, physical education, and art. Students had a blast traveling to each classroom and spending time with the different teachers.

Later in the day we completed a "locked room" that a parent volunteer set up. We focused on team communication, problem solving, and being a good sport. Each of the two teams solved the puzzles and made it out in time!

In math our class collected some candy data and represented it in a bar graph .

We also read some Halloween themed stories.

It was great to see so many families attend our Halloween parade! I hope you enjoyed coming into the school and seeing all the great costumes and smiling faces.

On Tuesday LBS had Pajama day! We took some time to catch up on last week's work and go through a couple Daily L.A. stations. In the afternoon the grade 1/2 classes watched the movie Inside Out  to compliment our ongoing learning of:

  • personal characteristics, feelings, and emotions to explore understanding of self
  • how emotions show how an individual feels
  • how people can experience a range of feelings and emotions such as love, sadness, frustration, and joy

We then connected our social-soical-emotional learning to Science and began learning about the colour wheel!

With our assembly coming up on November 10th, students began creating some meaningful poppy art, learning about why we wear poppies, and how we can honour Remembrance Day. If you are in the school this month you will be able to see our work in the display case by the office.

We finished sharing the artifacts that students brought in. Thank you to everyone  for supporting your child with this! We have been learning lots about diversity in our class and have been exploring books that reflect this.

On Friday we began learning about the Four Scared Medicines and how they fit within the medicine wheel. Next week we will be looking more closely at their purpose as well as sketching them

In math we learned about regrouping and how a group of more than nine base ten blocks requires regrouping. Grade 2s also looked at representing numbers in expanded form.

At the end of the week we began our Place Value Creature math project. This task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of number representation and value based on our learning from September and October.

With a new month beginning, we completed our November calendars. Calendars were sent home this week as students completed them.

In writing our workshop focus is on making our writing clear though spacing. We learning about "spaghetti and meatball spacing" and practiced applying it to our writing.

For our "Best Part of Me" writing students conferenced 1:1 with me to express their ideas and add detail. I loved hearing all the ideas students generated.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Poppy Fund Donations
Students will be given a poppy on November 10th while honoring Remembrance Day at school.  If you would like to send in a monetary donation to support the Poppy Fund that day, it would be greatly appreciated.  You can also show your support by donating online through following the link: https://legion.ca/donations

MOMMS Pet Food Drive
To support Veterans and their dogs, our community pet store is collecting donations. These items will help support the pets that bring so much comfort and happiness to those who have served our country. Please send any donations to school with your child, on or before November 10th. They will be dropped off by Room 7 and 8. See the information below for donation details.

Soft Entry

Our "soft entry" time is from 8:00-8:10am. Our instructional time begins at 8:10am when attendance is taken and our morning meeting time begins. It is really important for students to arrive at school on time so they understand what to do in the morning and can participate in our morning routine and morning work.

Listen to Reading

The Daily LA Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students if headphones aren't used. If you are able to send headphones for your child to keep in their cubby at school, that would be very helpful.

By using our class code you can help our class earn points to put towards new books! I will be sending home Scholastic flyers each month. Happy reading!
