Hello families,

This week we prepared some work for parent-teacher conferences. Students completed their good copies of their Best Part of Me writing. Congrats to Room 8 for finishing their first Writer's Workshop this year! I am so impressed with our class's writing stamina. We are already up to 10 minutes which is amazing!

We also completed their Place Value Donut projects. I loved seeing all the creativity in how students demonstrated their understanding.

Here are a couple of the math talks we did this week.

Within our Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program we continued to look at initial and final sounds in words such as "sat" -> "Ssssss" and "bird" -> "D d d" ,  as well as word insertion and deletion in compound words like "sunshine" and "someone". It's a fun daily exercise that students seem to enjoy!

We continued to work on our writing goals by practicing letter formation and placement. We are using the strategy "sky, grass, dirt" letters as well as  "spaghetti and meatball spacing" to help students understand where and how to place their letters.  We were lucky enough to have some "spaceman" help us!

(this sentence uses every letter in the alphabet!)

We also began some "On the Weekend" writing.

Word Work Groups

In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters T, G, P and N using the Animated Literacy actions. We then cut and sorted pictures that start with these letters. Ask your child about the actions and sounds for T, G, P and N.

In Ms. Lacour's Word Work Group students have been learning about vowels. This week we continued with short "A" and looked at the "AN" and "AD" word families. We then sorted pictures to match the corresponding words. Ask your child about words in the "AN" and "AD" family.

In Ms. Midgley's group we learned about the digraph "ch." Students sorted pictures based on whether they start with c, h or ch. We learned about the Animated Literacy character Chauncy Chipmunk who chops cheddar cheese. Ask your child about the sound and action for "ch."

In Ms. Gierl & Ms. Greens's groups we continued learning about short and long A sounds. We dug a little deeper into the role of King E and how when there are paired vowels, King E tells the vowel to say its name. Students sorted short A words, long A words, and oddball/rule breaker words like "have" and "what." Ask your child about King E!

In Science we continued to explore colours and learned about secondary, primary, warm, and cool colours. Students took part in some colour mixing experiments with paint as well as a Skittles experiment to demonstrate colour mixing and a chemical reaction.

During mindfulness we learned the Count to Five strategy as well as Bear and Color breaths.

Check out some of the responsible work choices students made this week!

Have  a great weekend,

Ms. Greenhall

Listen to Reading

The Daily LA Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students if headphones aren't used. If you are able to send headphones for your child to keep in their cubby at school, that would be very helpful.
