Hello families,

This week we focused on preparing for our Remembrance Day Assembly.  We worked with our buddies to make meaningful thank you statements for Veterans, explored the different kids of poppies around the world, and began to gain a deeper understanding of what peace means to us and what that looks like in our classroom, country, and world.  During our assembly room 7 and 8 were incredibly respectful and responsible. Excellent work!

Thursday afternoon we walked to MOMMs pet store to deliver the pet donations from our LBS community. Thank you to everyone who donated, it was really nice to see the kids excited about this initiative! The store staff were so pleased and shared that the Veterans Food bank were very appreciative when they picked them up. We are incredibly proud of our students for getting involved in the community and making change.

The Royal Canadian Legion has created a mobile website that allows you to scan your poppy and read stories of Canadian veterans. We explored this resource by visiting https://poppystories.ca/scanner.  Students were surprised to read/listen about such a variety of people that fought in the war.

In math Grade 2 students continued practicing representing numbers in expanded form while Grade 1 students worked on ten frames and subitizing. Both grades also continued to explore and utilize the Montessori materials to practice their skills.

In literacy we have been working on our Best Part of Me writing plans.  Students were given a graphic organizer for their "just right" level and worked on referring to their brainstorming page to fill out their plan. Our writing goals are incorporating spaces, printing neatly and including sensory language.

We explored the five senses to help us think about sensory language and  learned what the word "synonym" is. Instead of using common words like "happy" and "big", synonyms help make our writing more interesting because they are juicy words.

We also began learning about the Four Sacred Medicines this week. Students sketched tobacco, as well as learned about its purpose within the Medicine Wheel and ethnobotany practices.

Save The Date Book Fair!

Dear families,

Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together. So, save the date! Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair will take place on:

Monday, November 21st till Sunday, November 27th

Virtual Book Fair Link: https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5163641 (link will go live on Monday, November 21st)

When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or send in cash for your child to purchase books in person. We will be sending home a letter with more information soon!  Happy reading!

Soft Entry

Our "soft entry" time is from 8:00-8:10am. Our instructional time begins at 8:10am when attendance is taken and our morning meeting time begins. It is really important for students to arrive at school on time so they understand what to do in the morning and can participate in our morning routine and morning work.

Listen to Reading

The Daily LA Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students if headphones aren't used. If you are able to send headphones for your child to keep in their cubby at school, that would be very helpful.
