Hello families,

This week we joined Mrs. Green's class to create leaf creatures. We were inspired by the book Leaf Man by Lois Elhert. We accompanied our creatures with some descriptive writing.  Students utilized a graphic organizer with sentence frames, or blank lines and copied the writing prompts from the board.

During our artist residency this week we did some line work with paint and markers. We learned that there are many different lines that we can make such as zig zag, swirly, curvy, long, short, broken and dotted!

In literacy we have now finished the Animated Literacy Alphabet! Ask your child to go through the whole alphabet with you! We have been practicing spelling and identifying sounds in words using the actions. As we move into more writing tasks, students will have the opportunity to use the phonetic actions to support them in their inventive spelling.

This week we also started daily word play to build students' phonemic awareness. Here is a video explaining the Heggerty program if you are interested!

During word work in the morning students practiced making words with set letters on whiteboards. One of the letter sets was  S    A     H    I    T

In math we learned about the Montessori coloured bead bars and reviewed our teen numbers. Students then continued to practice place value, continuing to represent their understanding in multiple ways.

During our daily math practice we have been taking part in Number Talks where students practice their mathematical reasoning and justifying their answer. Here are two that we did this week!

Looking at numbers to 100, we began working with hundreds charts, practicing filling in the missing numbers, as well as  starting some skip counting.

Grade 1: I can skip count by 2s and 10s.
Grade 2: I can skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s.

We also learned some new math games. Math games allow students to practice their math skills in a fun and low stakes environment!

Inspired by the Northern lights, we began the rough drafts of our Art Cards. Throughout the process students practiced giving/receiving feedback from their peers and implementing it to their drafts.

We have been learning about the Medicine Wheel and what the word "ancestor" means. A family questionnaire was sent home on Thursday with your child. Please work through the questionnaire with your child. When completed, please send the questionnaire back to school along with an artifact that represents your family ancestry. Next week, your child will have the opportunity to share their artifact and information about their family with the class.

Please note at the bottom of the questionnaire if the artifact can be passed around during sharing circle, or if it is for "student eyes only". A picture of the item is also great if it is something that is of great importantace.

Here is an example of Mrs. Green's artifact she brought in. I am hoping to start our artifact sharing this upcoming Monday with all students having a chance to share by the end of the week on Thursday, October 28th.

Along with the book The Medicine Wheel - Stories of a Hoop Dancer by Teddy Anderson, we looked at the beautiful book Be a Good Ancestor  by Gabrielle and Leona Prince. These books illustrate the importance of the number four in relation to the Medicine Wheel: the four seasons, directions, and stages of life and growth.

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend!

Ms. Greenhall

Halloween at LBS

Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Please have students  come to school with their costumes on. Costumes must be comfortable enough to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes can be challenging for students to work in throughout the day/distracting for others and will not be permitted. In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.

The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.

November 1st  is a school spirit day, and the theme will be Pajama Day.

Remembrance Day Assembly

Room 8 and Room 7 are hosting this year's Remembrance Day assembly. It will take place on November 10th in the late morning. Parents are invited to attend and more details will be emailed out closer to the day.

Epic! Listen to Reading

If you are able, please send headphones for your child to use at school. They will be kept in their cubby to use during listen to reading time. This year we will be using Epic! and we do have a class code but I believe it only works between 7am-3pm, but you are welcome to try it at home: ypq1713

Library Books

Each student can take out 2 library books for the duration of 2 weeks. I encourage  students to leave one book at school and to take one home so they always have something to read that they are interested in. We have library time every Tuesday afternoon so if your child wants to exchange their books please ensure if they brought one home that it is sent back to school for library time.

Looking to shop for books online through Scholastic year round? I have set up a scholastic account for our class. By using our class code you can help our class earn points to put towards new books! I will be sending home Scholastic flyers each month. Happy reading!

Class Code: RC358893

Birthday Walk

Is your child's birthday coming up? At LBS we like to celebrate with the Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun. A Google Slide template has been created on my Google Classroom to share the story of your child. I will also email it out each month to those who have a child with a birthday that month.  Please carefully review the instructions and let me know if you have any questions. Please make a copy and do not edit the template. When it is complete, please share it with me through email so I can share it with the class on your child's special day!

Art Cards

Absences

If your child is going to be absent, please make sure to contact the office via phone or email. I would also appreciate being cc'd on the email so I am kept in the loop!

Physical Education
This year, we will have indoor gym time every other day. On the days that we do not have time in the gym, we will be going outside for phys ed. Please make sure your child has appropriate shoes for both indoor and outdoor phys ed. At LBS, we love to go outside in all types of weather (unless it's colder than -20) so we will be going outside - rain, snow, or shine!
