Hello families,
This week in Social Studies Grade 3 students watched some videos about child rights activist Malala, recording important information using jot notes. They then compiled their notes to create a visual sketchbook page about Malala and her contributions. We then began to look at Ryan Hreljec and what rights he advocates for. Students demonstrated their understanding of Ryan's Well through a concept map.
Grade 2 students started their communities planning page. They were asked to choose two of the three communities we have been learning about and compare them based on their resources, services, landforms, goods, etc.
Students then created a Venn diagram based on their notes. We will be sharing and extending our understanding on these communities next week.
We also finished up our two main projects. Students will take part in peer feedback loops and reflections before fully completing their work. I am so impressed with how engaged, independent and creative everyone was with their non-fiction National Geographic books and Geometricities.
As we move closer to the end of our class novel, The One and Only Ivan, we brainstormed about the main character, Ivan. This included his physical adaptations, character traits, and natural habitat. Students have also been taking part in sketch noting as they listen to the story via Miss. Greenhall and the audiobook.
We also learned a little about the original Ivan silverback gorilla, discussing the guiding question: how can humans best help animals? Many students agreed that while humans can make a great impact on animal conservation, it is important that their natural habitat is preserved and they are kept with other animals of their species .
On this topic we further looked at some updated videos and pictures of the newborn baby gorilla at the Calgary Zoo!
Our last nature kit was Riparian forest. Students explored this kit through the familiar thinking routine of wonder mapping. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have had these artifacts in our classroom over the last 4 weeks!
In math we began learning about fractions and the vocabulary associated with the concept.
We also took advantage of the nice weather and spent one of our Daily L.A. times out in the garden!
