Hello families,

This week we played around with oil pastels, which are very different from the types of art media we have been using this year. Check out these beautiful spring flowers students created!

In math we continued learning about 3D shapes and polygons. We completed some WODBs as well as created our own 3D shapes and  regular/irregular polygons!

Students are now applying their understanding of 3D shapes to create drafts of some "Wanted" shape posters. As they create their characters, students need to include the shape's attributes as well as some real life examples. We will continue these into next week.

In science students reviewed their field notes from the zoo field trip and then chose a wild animal that they wish to research. We will be creating nonfiction books inspired by the National Geographic Kids series. To prepare for our research, we discussed the features of a non-fiction text, looked at exemplars, and filled out a research graphic organizer as a class.  Students then referred to multiple resources to research their animal and fill out their own graphic organizer.

Students also received some teacher feedback and worked on implementing it into their research.

In social studies we are moving into our last community, Saskatoon. We completed a glossary of key terms and have some very exciting artifacts coming into our room over the next few weeks to support our learning of the prairie community.

Room 5 loves  puzzles. Here are some of the new ones that were completed this week!

On Friday afternoon we were lucky  to have some grade 4/5s teach us some skipping techniques and tricks! Students are encouraged to practice their skills during recess and at home.

During the month of May our grade 2/3 team have the very exciting opportunity to borrow nature kits from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. These kits will include artifacts and information about the plants and animals native to Canada's prairie lands. This experience will allow students to examine things such as  fur, antlers, skulls, feathers, molds of teeth, footprints, and even scat! We are so excited for our students to extend their scientific understanding through the demonstration of respect, critical thinking, and wonder!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Greenhall
