Hello families,
This week our focus was on preparing for our field trip next Wednesday. We put on our zoologist hats and practiced collecting information from watching live cameras at zoos. We recorded our findings through sketching, labeling, and jot notes. We will be using these techniques to gather information when we visit the Calgary zoo.
Looking at a map of the Calgary zoo, we labeled the areas we are going to visit, referring to our schedule for that day.
We also created a zoo glossary, defining and illustrating the key vocabulary we will be using during our zoo exploration.
In writing this week, students received the following writing prompts:
- choose an animal you would want to be and provide detailed reasons why
- create an animal riddle including information about the animal's appearance, habitat, diet, adaptation, and whether they are a predator or prey
We also examined some fiction and nonfiction texts about animals. Students recorded their similarities and differences in a Venn diagram.
As we continue our exploration of 3D shapes, we learned about vertices, sides, and faces. Students used the geometric solid shapes to collect information about these attributes.
We also took part in some shape detective riddles and WODB (Which One Doesn't Belong?) tasks.
Zoo Field Trip Information
Students will be required to bring a water bottle, packed lunch and snacks, a backpack, appropriate footwear for walking, and dressed for the weather. The rainforest exhibit requires all visitors to wear masks to protect the gorillas. Teachers will be providing disposable masks to students, but feel free to send your child with one if you like. Please have your child wear their LBS school shirt or the colour blue to help assist our volunteers.
