Hello families,

It is hard to believe that January is almost at an end! This week in social studies we continued discussing clean water as well as our wants and needs. Students first brainstormed things that "I can't imagine life without". We then discussed human needs referring to Maslow's Hierarchy. It was fascinating to hear students making connections to physical and psychological needs!

We then paired up with our Social Studies buddies and practiced our research skills within our social studies textbook. The communities we will be focusing on are the Acadians, Inuit, and Ukrainians of Canada. We are very fortunate to have a guest presenter coming in a couple weeks to help us further explore Inuit culture!

As we explore liquids in science, we conducted an experiment about mixtures. We observed how salt disappears when mixed with water because it dissolves. When I added oil to the water, many students concluded that oil and water do not mix, therefore they cannot create a mixture. As a class we then watched a video about the Dawn soap company and how their soap helps ducks recover from oil spills!

After, we wrote about "If I Were a Liquid". Some liquids students chose to write about included:
  • coca cola
  • milk
  • fresh water
  • maple syrup
  • hot chocolate
  • ketchup
  • mustard
  • oil
  • melted ice cream
  • orange crush

In Writing Workshop we created a text using the procedural writing topic: making hot chocolate. I put student's writing to the test at the end of the week by following their instructions to make hot chocolate.

Some turned our better than others!

We of course created some art to go with our writing! For this project students had a choice of two designs, and  followed step-by-step instructions using chalk pastels.

In math we are always practicing our regrouping skills, often through games and whiteboard activities.  We have taken a pause on algebra and moved into multiplication! Many students were so surprised how easy multiplication is if you know your skip counting well. We practiced creating arrays with the coloured bead bars and their adjacent stamps.

Have a great weekend!
