Hello families,

In Writing Workshop this week we published our writing of "How to Build a Snowman". Students did a great job at including detail in their steps so their readers did not need to make any assumptions. Hopefully we will get a chance to put our writing to the test next snowfall!

In Science we continued exploring liquids. We first reviewed the states of matter, focusing in on liquids, and most importantly, water. We learned about the importance of clean water and how water is accessed around the world. Students then brainstormed some ways that humans use water.

We then looks at the different processes of water through scientific vocabulary, using visuals and labeling to depict examples.

As a class we put on our scientist hats and conducted a science experiment called the "Liquids Race", making estimates on which liquids would be the fastest or slowest. Students observed and recorded information including the shape/colour of the drops, how far each one traveled in cm, and used scientific thinking to determine the viscosity of each liquid. We then took part in a second race with partners using straws to blow the liquids across a surface.

For our fourth thinking routine: Alter Your Course Often, we got outside and mapped our school from a bird's eye view. Some important features that students included were  our west parking lot and playground, the east garden and playground, portables, north front door, south goal posts,  and the baseball diamonds.

In math we have been focusing in on algebra. We learned that there are many different ways to solve for an unknown value such as using manipulatives or balancing equations. This is a

Our maps of Canada are so close to being complete! Students have been making excellent connections between the geography of the provinces/territories and the people's way of living. For example, Nova Scotia is very close to the ocean, therefore it makes sense for the people to use boats as transportation, fishing as an occupation, and  eat lots of seafood!

With winter in full force we create a "Winter Favourites" page using sketch noting techniques.

Fun lunch was a success! They are every second Thursday. Our next one will be Thursday February 3rd. Please take a look at last week's blog for information on account set-up and information for the next two lunches.

Have a great weekend,

Miss. Greenhall
