December 17th, 2021

Hello families,

Here we are at the end of the year 2021 already! Wow has the time flied!

Our last week before seeing each other again in 2022 was a great one.

In writing we watched the cartoon music video of " You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch". We then put our songwriting hats on and wrote our own lyrics to follow the song. Practicing "backwards similes", students had a great time playing with words to communicate the opposite. An example is "You're as soft as a rock, and as kind as a grizzly bear".

To accompany our Grinch lyrics, we created some Grinch tree art.

To stay in theme with the Grinch, we also explored abstract art and colored our own Max art. Some students even added more lines and shapes to make their Max even more abstract.

In math we continued to practice the addition and subtraction strategies we have been learning over the past few months through word problems, equations, and games. It has been wonderful seeing each student's growth and "aha" moments throughout our learning of carrying and borrowing.

We also reviewed and practiced some winter themed algebra.

In mapping we zoomed in and out of Google Earth, defining the different levels in which our world is organized. We even zoomed all the way into LBS and got to see our school!

When presented with a world map, students did a great job at colouring it using the Montessori map colours, and ensuring our printing is straight, neat, and in all capitals. We also learned about the main bodies of water, the equator, and the hemispheres. Tying in with out knowledge of temperature, we explored how weather changes based on where you live in relation to the equator.

We also were introduced to our procedural writing unit! Here is a great video to illustrate the importance of being clear in your procedural writing.

Students wrote instructions on how to make a marshmallow snowman using straws and toothpicks. On Friday we tested our writing and followed a partner's instructions. It was so much fun to see how detailed instructions are so important!

On Friday morning we also took part in a Grinch mapping activity. Students grabbed a map of our classroom and had to find all the Grinch and Max pictures in the room. What a blast!

Lastly, I surprised students with ugly sweater ornaments for them to design and take home. I hope they help spread some holiday cheer !

Thank you for all the wonderful cards and gifts.  It has been an absolute amazing first half of our school year and I am so excited for what's to come in the new year!

I hope your winter break is filled with love and happiness,

Miss. Greenhall
