Hello families,

We had a wonderful short week honouring Remembrance Day and showing our appreciation for our veterans.

Through investigation of the history, purpose and emotions of Remembrance Day, we has some very meaningful conversations about veterans and how we can show empathy and respect. Students spent the week drafting and revising a letter to the veterans, accompanying it with some beautiful poppy art.

In literacy groups my group has been learning about alphabetical order. We initially began by exploring dictionaries, then we practiced labeling things in the classroom,  alphabetizing all the labels in small groups, and then as a large group! Moving forward, this important skill will help us when looking up words in the dictionary while playing literacy games.

In math we have been applying our understanding of place value to carrying in addition. We will continue to practice this foundational skill alongside other math concepts. To support our understanding of basic facts, we had two "number talks" where we discussed different mathematical strategies and I recorded student's strategies to solve an equation. As a class we looked specifically at the strategies of counting on and doubles.

We also began our first math problem called "The T-Shirt Problem". This math task requires data collection, repeated addition, and problem solving skills. It will be presented during our upcoming conferences.

Alongside our novel Finders Keepers we took a virtual tour of the Head Smashed in Buffalo museum! It was amazing to see the different displays and talk about how Indigenous people use the whole buffalo for many different things.

As we finished up our bat inquiry, students explored the lifecycle of bats, and sketched a few different species into their bat books.

Thank you to everyone who brought in plastic yogurt/cream cheese containers. We are still looking for a few extras so please send them to school if you have some!

Have a wonderful weekend,
