Hello families,

This week, students have been slowly finishing up their tree collage artwork for their sketchbook covers. I am so pleased with their attention to detail!

In math we delved into pictographs by independently using data to create a bar graph with all its important components. We also introduced the concept of carrying with base ten blocks. Students practiced exchanging 10 unit-beads for 1 golden bead bar, and 10 golden bead bars for 1 hundred square. We will continue to practice this concept into next week.

We have begun literacy groups and it has been so much fun learning the Animated Literacy program! This program is not only enjoyable with its wacky characters, great stories, and fun physical actions, it will be a great tool moving forward with spelling and reading for all students. We have learned up to letter "E" so far. Take a moment to ask your child what the actions are!

Here is a video of all the actions if you are interested:

We have completed our first writing workshop piece! Each student went through the whole process of the workshop, including plan, share, draft, and revise. With the focus being on quality not quantity, students demonstrated perseverance and many expressed being very proud of their finished pieces.

With the beautiful season of Autumn here,  we took advantage of the wonderful weather and rich colours to create a "Timeline of a Leaf". We discussed why leaves change and the process they go through each season.

Leading up to Wednesday, we discussed the value and importance of diversity in our classroom, country, and world. Students learned about residential schools and the lasting impact these events have on Indigenous people. On Wednesday we had a beautiful assembly hosted by our grade 4/5s and then delved into the short writing prompt of "I wear an orange shirt because...".

In the light of celebrating and embracing diversity, students created friendship booklets, describing ways that we can be kind to others and why friends are so important. We also started to create a meaningful art piece about how each child matters.

We finished off the week with a sit spot by learning about acrostic poems as well as leaf rubbing!

Please return forms that were sent home in brown folders as soon as possible.

If you wish to not participate in ADmazing Savings, please return the folder and book back to school with your child.

Have a great weekend!
